Apple Inc. Sets June-Quarter Records, but AAPL Valuation Stays Stretched
Apple posted broad-based growth and record June-quarter results, partly helped by tariff refunds. The operating case improved, but $270 fair value leaves the shares overvalued.

Investment thesis
Why is this mispriced?
- 01
1. Apple may be mispriced because the market is extrapolating a June-quarter acceleration that included temporary tariff refunds into a premium 37.4x TTM P/E multiple.
- 02
2. The operating franchise remains unusually strong: revenue increased across every geography, iPhone, Mac and Services set June-quarter records, and the active-device installed base reached a new high.
- 03
3. Margin quality is better than the headline alone suggests but weaker than the reported 50.1% gross margin implies. Excluding the approximately 2-percentage-point tariff-refund benefit, gross margin was about 48.1%, still above 46.5% a year earlier.
- 04
4. Cash generation and returns remain central supports, with $31.91B of quarterly free cash flow, a 63.9% FY2025 ROIC and a lower FY2025 net-debt position, but the 2.9% TTM free-cash-flow yield leaves little room for execution setbacks.
Business
Overview
Apple Inc. (AAPL) designs and sells consumer technology products and related services through an integrated hardware, software and services ecosystem. Its principal products include iPhone, Mac, iPad, AirPods, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro, while Services includes offerings such as the App Store, Apple Music, Apple Pay, iCloud and Apple TV. In Q3 FY2026, Products generated $78.68B of revenue and Services generated $30.74B. Apple reports geographically across the Americas, Europe, Greater China, Japan and the Rest of Asia Pacific, and this quarter every geographic segment grew year over year. The model combines periodic hardware purchases with recurring and transaction-based services revenue from a large installed base. Management said the installed base of active devices reached an all-time high across all major product categories and geographic segments. Competition remains intense and product cycles can be uneven, while manufacturing, components, technology, applications and content depend partly on third parties. EV/EBITDA was not disclosed in the supplied data; the snapshot uses 0.0 only as an unavailable-data placeholder, not as a valuation multiple.

What changed this quarter
Apple reported Q3 FY2026 revenue of $109.42B, up 16.4% from $94.04B in Q3 FY2025. Diluted EPS increased 28.7% to $2.02 from $1.57, and net income rose to $29.79B from $23.43B. With no prior company guidance included in the release, the report card uses the same quarter a year earlier as its reference. Revenue, EPS, free cash flow, gross margin and operating margin all improved against that comparison.
Growth was broad rather than dependent on a single geography. Americas revenue rose to $45.78B from $41.20B, Europe to $29.40B from $24.01B, Greater China to $18.82B from $15.37B, Japan to $6.55B from $5.78B, and Rest of Asia Pacific to $8.87B from $7.67B. Management characterized the quarter as producing double-digit revenue growth in every geographic segment. The Greater China increase is particularly relevant because it shows that the quarter's acceleration was not confined to Apple's Western markets.
The category mix was also constructive. iPhone revenue increased 21.7% to $54.25B, Mac increased 28.7% to $10.35B, and Services increased 12.1% to $30.74B. Wearables, Home and Accessories rose 6.5% to $7.88B. iPad was the exception, declining 5.9% to $6.19B. Apple said iPhone, Mac and Services each set June-quarter revenue records, giving the quarter a broader foundation than an iPhone-only product-cycle rebound.
Margins improved materially on a reported basis. Gross margin reached 50.1%, up from 46.5%, while operating margin increased to 32.6% from 30.0%. However, Apple disclosed that tariff refunds added approximately 2 percentage points to gross margin and $0.11 to diluted EPS. Subtracting those disclosed effects implies gross margin of about 48.1% and EPS of about $1.91 before the refunds. Both would still be above the prior-year results, but the adjustment reduces the apparent magnitude and repeatability of the improvement.
Free cash flow was $31.91B, compared with $24.41B a year earlier. Operating income increased to $35.70B from $28.20B despite higher spending: research and development expense rose to $11.73B from $8.87B, and selling, general and administrative expense increased to $7.35B from $6.65B. The result therefore combined stronger demand, better gross economics and continued investment rather than relying on expense reductions.
Why it matters for the thesis
The quarter strengthens the evidence that Apple's installed base can support simultaneous hardware and services growth. Management said active devices reached an all-time high across all major product categories and geographies. That matters because the installed base is the bridge between device sales and recurring Services revenue, and it can make revenue more resilient than a pure hardware model would suggest.
The geographic breadth also lowers the risk that this quarter was produced by one isolated market. Every reported region grew, and Greater China revenue increased 22.4% year over year. One quarter does not establish a durable regional recovery, but it is a meaningful improvement in the evidence available. Similarly, double-digit growth across iPhone, Mac and Services shows that the result was not solely a temporary mix shift between product categories.
The central qualification is earnings quality. Tariff refunds contributed roughly $0.11, or 5.4%, of reported diluted EPS and approximately 2 percentage points of gross margin. These refunds are favorable economically, but the release does not establish them as recurring. The appropriate thesis conclusion is therefore that underlying performance improved, not that a 50.1% gross margin should automatically become the new normalized baseline.
Apple's financial quality remains evident in the supplied longer-term figures. FY2025 ROIC was 63.9%, and TTM free cash flow was $136.7B. Yet those strengths are already reflected in a 37.4x TTM P/E and a 2.9% TTM free-cash-flow yield at $325.475 per share. The print raises confidence in the operating franchise, but valuation requires continued growth and high margins with limited tolerance for disappointment.
What Apple Inc. is worth after the print
There is no prior SageNoodle valuation to carry forward, so this update establishes an initial fair-value range. We use the supplied TTM EPS of $8.71 and apply scenario-specific P/E multiples. The approach is intentionally simple because the release did not provide forward revenue, earnings or cash-flow guidance. It avoids silently introducing an undisclosed forecast while making the market's required assumptions visible.
The bear case applies 23x TTM EPS, producing approximately $200 per share. This assumes that tariff-assisted margins retreat, hardware growth normalizes and the market reduces the premium assigned to Apple's quality. The base case applies 31x, producing $270. This remains a substantial quality premium and assumes the installed base supports durable Services and product earnings, while recognizing that part of the quarter's margin and EPS improvement was temporary. The bull case applies 39x, producing $340, and requires the broad-based acceleration and AI-related ecosystem benefits to sustain a multiple near the current level.
With probabilities of 25% for the bear case, 50% for the base case and 25% for the bull case, probability-weighted value is also $270 per share. Against the current price of $325.475, that represents 17.0% downside to fair value. Under the stated verdict rule, Apple is Overvalued because fair value is no more than 85% of the share price. The strong quarter prevents a more conservative operating assessment, but it does not support raising fair value to the market price without assuming either higher normalized earnings than disclosed or a more aggressive multiple.
What could prove this wrong
The cautious valuation could be too low if the quarter marks the start of a sustained, broad product cycle rather than a temporary acceleration. iPhone and Mac grew more than 20%, Services remained in double digits, every geography expanded, and management introduced the all-new Siri AI at WWDC26. If these factors produce durable earnings growth, a multiple near the bull-case 39x could remain defensible and fair value would be closer to $340.
The thesis could also be too optimistic if the reported margin becomes the market's baseline and then reverses. Approximately 2 percentage points of gross margin and $0.11 of EPS came from tariff refunds. A return toward lower underlying margins, particularly alongside rising R&D expense, would weaken earnings conversion even if revenue continues to grow.
Product and geographic concentration remain relevant. iPhone generated $54.25B, nearly half of quarterly revenue, while Greater China remains exposed to competitive, regulatory and geopolitical conditions. Apple's filing also identifies reliance on third parties for components, manufacturing, technology, applications, services and content. Disruption in any of these areas could impair supply, product transitions or economics.
Finally, valuation itself is a source of downside. At 37.4x TTM earnings and a 2.9% free-cash-flow yield, the current price assumes that Apple's quality and growth persist. Slower Services growth, weaker replacement demand, AI execution problems or unfavorable regulation could compress the multiple even if the business remains profitable and cash generative.

Both sides
Bull vs bear
Bull case
- Revenue increased 16.4%, with growth across every reported geographic segment.
- iPhone, Mac and Services set June-quarter revenue records, demonstrating broad category strength.
- The active-device installed base reached an all-time high across every major product category and geography.
- Quarterly free cash flow increased to $31.91B from $24.41B, while FY2025 ROIC was 63.9%.
- Underlying gross margin remained above the prior year even after removing the disclosed tariff-refund benefit.
Bear case
- Approximately 2 percentage points of gross margin and $0.11 of EPS came from tariff refunds that are not established as recurring.
- The shares trade at 37.4x TTM EPS and a 2.9% TTM free-cash-flow yield, leaving limited valuation protection.
- iPhone remains the largest revenue category, creating exposure to replacement cycles and product execution.
- R&D expense rose to $11.73B from $8.87B, faster than revenue, increasing the burden on future returns from innovation spending.
- Third-party manufacturing, component, technology and content dependencies expose Apple to supply-chain and geopolitical disruption.
What could break
Risk matrix
| Risk | Severity | Probability | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium valuation compresses | High | Medium | A 37.4x TTM P/E and 2.9% free-cash-flow yield require sustained growth and high returns. Even sound operating results could produce weak shareholder returns if the multiple falls. |
| Tariff-related margin benefit reverses | Medium | High | Apple disclosed that refunds added approximately 2 percentage points to gross margin and $0.11 to EPS. The release did not identify that benefit as recurring. |
| Product-cycle concentration | High | Medium | iPhone generated $54.25B of the quarter's $109.42B of revenue, making results sensitive to replacement demand and product transitions. |
| China, regulation and geopolitics | High | Medium | Greater China is a material geographic segment, while Apple's filing identifies trade disputes, government policies, regulation and geopolitical tensions as risks. |
| AI and research execution | Medium | Medium | R&D expense increased materially, and the valuation assumes that software and AI investments strengthen rather than dilute the ecosystem's economics. |
